Indonesian Shrimp Export Decrease by 20%

Shrimp export of Indonesia decreased 20% since 2006. Japan altered their import source to Thailand and Vietnam. Johan Suryadharma (Head of Cold STorage Association East Java) said that there were already 30 containers of shrimp from Indonesia that was denied. This was because the strict rules on antibiotis. Until the year end it will be hard to reach the export target of 400 thousang tons.

Although shrimp export to Japan decrease, still European and USA market is open. At 2006 export to US was 60 thousand tons while to EU around 40 thousand tons.

Report Highlights:

Shrimp farming production continues to grow while traditional shrimp catch production is decreasing. Penaeus monodon accounts for the largest share of production though Penaeus vannamei appears to overtake it. Penaeus vannamei is largely cultivated by semi-intensive and intensive farming. Indonesian shrimp producers are facing virus attacks that decrease production and antibiotic residues that result in restrictions by destination countries. Because shrimp comes from various sources, production can not be fully traced and standards are inconsistent.

EU Flight Ban Effects on Indonesian Fish Export

Export of Indonesia fish products to EU (European Union) nations will be threatened by flight ban of Indonesian flight to Europe.

A lot of airlines transporting indonesia products is not from Indonesia so it is not a direct effect to the fish export. The image of embargo by EU is much greater. Until now, the export of fish products are export mainly by means of cargo sea transportation.

The amount of export to EU is much smaller compared to Japan, but this problem should not be viewed as small problem because Indonesian people worry that the view of Indonesian product will be decreased. At the end Indonesian government certainmy does not want the export to Europe to halt.

Product image is an important thing for the sustainability of export. The minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Freddy Numberi, had the same thoughts but still he hops the the flight ban will not affect the export of fish products.

This November, an inspection team from EU will arrive at Indonesia to visit some fish proccesing centers. From the last visit at February 2007, still the government has a lot of job to do.

If Indonesia fish is not accepted in Europe it is possible that the price will decrease because it will be used as an excuse by other purchasing countries.

23 Million USD: Fish Export Value of Central Java

The export value of fisheries and aquaculture product of Central Java Province on the periode of January - April 2007 reached USD 23 Million. The end year target is predicted to increase 5% from last years value which was USD 70,6 Million.

"To reach this target we have to increase the quality. This is because the importers ask for a quite high standard of quality" said the Sartono Tirtohardjo, Head of Marketing, MMAF Service, Central Java.

The increase of quality is started from the pre production until the market product. To increase the quality, the government has done several programs to the exporter companies. This is important because still a lot of exporters in this region does not have a certificate of good proccessing. From 30 company of fish exporters, only 8 have this certificate. There is 3 category of this certificate (A, B and C - A is the highest). Without this certificate the company will certainly be banned by the Indonesia government because of internal suspect.

Until now the main commodity of Central java is frozen shrimp, canned tuna, tilapia and sea crab. The destination of export is; USA, Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, China, Germany, Hongkong and Taiwan.
